Which size suncatcher should I choose: 15, 20 or 25 cm?

The round suncatcher comes in 15, 20 or 25 cm across. The 20 cm is the middle choice: it fills a standard sash window pane without crowding it, and it is the size the from-$89 price is for. Choose 15 cm for a small pane or a desk window, and 25 cm for a wide window or a wall.

Which size do most windows take?

The 20 cm. One buyer put it plainly: the 20 cm was the right size for a standard sash window, and the 15 would have been lost in it. If you are unsure, the 20 cm is the safe answer for a window.

A suncatcher is seen from across a room, not from arm's length, so a size that looks large on the desk looks right in the window. Measure the pane the piece will hang in, picture a circle in it with clear glass on every side, and pick the largest size that leaves that margin. The chain adds a little height above the round, so allow for it when you work out where the hook goes.

How do the three sizes compare?

The three sizes are the same piece at three diameters: same glass, same kiln, same brass frame and chain. What changes is how much window it takes up and how far away it reads.

SizeWhere it suitsPrice
15 cmA small pane, a desk or bathroom window, or one of a clusterShown on the create page
20 cmA standard sash window pane; the size to start from for a windowFrom $89
25 cmA wide window, a landing, or a wall where it reads as a pictureShown on the create page

Whichever you pick, the piece hangs on its brass chain in a window, on a wall hook or from the ceiling; the hanging guide matches sizes to places in more detail.

Does the price change with the size?

Yes. The suncatcher is from $89, and $89 is the 20 cm. The live price for each of the three sizes is shown on the create page once your design is drawn, before you approve anything.

Designing is free and you can switch sizes on the result screen and watch the price change; nothing is charged until you approve a design and check out through Tedooo. The price covers the whole piece: the glass, the firing, the brass frame and the chain. Shipping and any duties are calculated at checkout on top. For the Christmas ornament there is one size, 10 cm, at $59.99; suncatcher or ornament puts the two side by side.

Does a bigger size show more detail?

The design does not change with the size: the same lead lines and the same pieces of glass are cut larger or smaller. A bigger round is easier to read from further away; a smaller one is the same drawing, closer to the glass.

What you approve on the create page is what we cut, at whichever size you pick, so look at the drawn design and ask whether its lines will read at the distance you will see it from. A portrait with a lot of fine lead lines, a wiry coat, for instance, is happier at 20 or 25 cm than at 15, where the lines sit close together. If you are unsure, message us with the design and the window and we will say; a person answers, usually within the day. The photo guide explains what makes a design draw cleanly in the first place.

Can I order more than one size?

Yes. Add the design to the bag at one size, then add it again at another; each goes in as its own piece. One buyer who could not decide ordered three.

Several sizes of the same portrait work well as a cluster in one wide window, or one per room. They go out in the same box. Start on the create page; the size choice comes after the design is drawn.

Questions this leaves

What size is the Christmas ornament?

One size: a 10 cm bauble of thick translucent glass with a gold cap, your pet's portrait at its centre, $59.99. It hangs from the cap on a tree hook.

Is 15 cm too small for a portrait?

Not for a small pane, a desk window or a cluster, which is what it is for. In a standard sash window it can look lost, as one buyer found, so for a full-size window start at 20 cm. Look at the drawn design: if it has many fine lines, go up a size.

Where exactly is the price for each size?

On the create page, once your design is drawn: the size control shows the live price for 15, 20 and 25 cm, and you can switch between them before you approve. The from-$89 figure on this site is the 20 cm. Nothing is charged until you check out.
